Thomas Le Clear was a self-taught painter of genre and portraits. He began his career in Buffalo, London and Canada. By 1839 he settled permanently in New York, exhibiting at both the National Academy and the Royal Academy, London. He was elected as a National Academician in 1863. His portrait of William Page painted in 1878 hangs in the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC.
